Former Manchester United, Manchester City and Juventus striker Carlos Tevez has announced that he is quitting football after losing his father. Tevez’s father and “number one fan” Segundo Raimundo contracted coronavirus last year and later died in February 2021 due to complications. But he’s not quitting football, he’s going to be a coach.
Thirty-eight-year-old Tevez, who left Boca Juniors a year ago, said he had offers to continue his career. However, the heartbroken Argentine was left without the supervision of his father, so he no longer had the strength to continue playing and decided to hang up his cleats.
“Why did I decide to quit? I lost my number one fan and that made me not want to play anymore ,” he said in an emotional TV interview with talk show Animales Sueltos.
Tevez, who had a very brief but lucrative stint at Shanghai Shenhua, is now preparing for a coaching career.
“I’m learning how to communicate. It’s something I have to prepare for. I’m not going to take a job at an old club and just tell the players they have to win, otherwise we’re all in trouble. I have to give the players the tools they need to win.”
Tevez started and finished at Boca, where he scored a total of 94 goals.
After transferring from West Ham, he won two Premier League titles and one Champions League with Manchester United, after which he made a surprise move to city rivals City and won the FA Cup and Premier League.
In total, Tevez scored 84 goals in 202 Premier League games and then thrived in Italy at Juventus, where he scored 50 goals in 95 games.
