Bizarre case: Borussia Dortmund will make more money if Real Madrid wins the Champions League than if it wins the final

In football you need to think at least one step ahead, ideally two or three. Borussia Dortmund’s management is great at this, as they know how to bring in young unknown talents and sell them for huge money. But its great planning has now put it in a rather bizarre situation.

Mario Götze, Mats Hummels, Henrik Mkhitaryan, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang or Ousmane Dembélé. More recently, for example, Jadon Sancho, Erling Haaland and Jude Bellingham. What do these players have in common?

Borussia Dortmund brought all of them in as young and unknown players for very low amounts. Within a few years they all grew into stars of world football and the yellow and black then sold them at a huge profit.

The latest shining example is Jude Bellingham. He was bought by Borussia as a 16-year-old sensation after one season in the Championship. He arrived from Birmingham for 30 million euros, leaving after three years as the world’s most wanted footballer for 103 million euros to Real Madrid.

Transfer bonus

However, the amount was not the final one, it also included bonuses. And these are putting Borussia in a rather bizarre situation right now. Purely financially, it would have been more profitable for them to lose the expected final against Real Madrid.

Dortmund would receive €20 million from UEFA for winning the trophy. But we come again to the bonuses in Bellingham’s contract. One of the bonuses is that if Real Madrid win the Champions League with the young Englishman, the royal club will send an additional 25 million euros to Germany. Borussia would thus collect more money if they lose in the final.

Of course, this is just a funny coincidence, five million euros will not play any role and Borussia will want to win the final at any cost. For the management, however, it could be at least a small patch in case of defeat.

Moreover, it may not be the last payment that will be made from Madrid to Dortmund. Another bonus will be sent to Los Blancos for the Spanish league title and if Bellingham wins the Ballon d’Or, which they are quite close to doing, Schwarzgelben will collect another nice sum.
