Will turnover champion Liverpool return three goals to Atalanta? In Bergamo, they are getting worried

They seemed to be building on their win over Liverpool with ease, but then Atalanta’s players scored twice in quick succession and showed their Europa League rivals how to turn the whole double-header around. It won’t be impossible.

They seemed to be building on their win over Liverpool with ease, but then Atalanta’s players scored twice in quick succession and showed their Europa League rivals how to turn the whole double-header around. It won’t be impossible.

Atalanta went into the home game in tremendous comfort. They scored three goals against Liverpool at Anfield during the week and took a big step towards progressing to the Europa League semi-finals with a 3-0 win. And at the start of the game, the good mood was evident.

Atalanta led 2:0 after 20 minutes and continued to squeeze their opponents. The Hellas goalkeeper also played his part in giving the Verona side something to play for in the second half. However, few expected Verona to equalise with two goals in the space of five minutes.

A lost win against an underdog

“Ten minutes of stoppage time is unfortunately a constant this season. It’s a pity we didn’t close it out in the first half. But we will laugh again on Thursday,” alluded Bergamo supporter Massimo in a liked comment under a Facebook post to the fact that Atalanta have lost several games this season in a similar fashion.

Moreover, this was not a lost game against a leading team, but against Hellas Verona, who are only one point above the relegation zone. At home, the favourite should be able to keep the two-goal lead, moreover, when they are totally dominating.

You can’t do that against Liverpool

Monday’s battle was watched with pleasure by Liverpool fans and players, who have to make up for the three-goal loss from the opening quarter-final in Bergamo on Thursday. The Reds did not have a good start to the rematch either, losing 0:1 at home to Crystal Palace.

“If we get two goals from a team that has one foot in Serie B, I’ll get chills on Thursday night. It will be difficult to repeat the performance from Anfield, at least we have the Copa Italia,” Atalanta supporter Giorgio reacted.

And Liverpool are good at turnovers, taking the most points from games they have lost in the Premier League. And even historically, the Reds have a tough root, basically paying for turnovers. Just think of the Champions League final against AC Milan or the memorable Champions League semi-final against Barcelona.
