At AC Milan he broke the curse of the number 9 on his jersey, reached the Scudetto and made it through to the Champions League semi-finals. Olivier Giroud will leave an indelible mark on the San Siro. But now he must move on. He will continue his career in the American MLS after this season.

Giroud transferred to AC in July 2021, from Chelsea in London for just under five million euros. And virtually immediately, he became one of the cornerstones of the Milan giant’s success.

In that time, the French national team’s all-time top scorer has understandably paid Milan several times over. In the red and black jersey, he has so far appeared in 130 matches, in which he has scored 48 goals and added 20 assists.

However, age is already taking its toll on Giroud in the current Serie A campaign, with him not being as valid a player for Stefano Pioli’s squad as in years past.

And with the 37-year-old striker’s contract expiring at the San Siro this June, given his performances of late, there hasn’t been much more to negotiate. On the other hand, for the cabin and the team overall, Giroud has always been an important figure.

Giroud’s biggest success with AC came at the end of the 2021/22 season, when the Rossoneri won their 19th championship title in a row.

His departure was speculated a few months ago, so now everything is officially confirmed. The experienced forward will leave for Los Angeles FC as a free agent, signing a contract until 2025 with an option for 2026.

Giroud to meet Lloris at LAFC

Giroud will thus be reunited with goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, his long-time French teammate who LAFC signed this winter from English Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur.

“It is an incredibly exciting day for everyone associated with LAFC to welcome Olivier, his wife Jennifer and his family to the club,” LAFC general manager John Thorrington said in a press release.

“Olivier has a clear desire to win, which he has consistently delivered on throughout his club and international career. His championship ambitions and his qualities as a person and player are directly in line with our club qualities. That is why we believe Olivier will be a great addition to our efforts to win more trophies,” he added.
