Crystal Palace players showed how easy it can be to shake up a defence on Wednesday night. Jean Philippe Mateta confirmed his fine form and struck after a Jordan Ayew pass. A rested Newcastle couldn’t keep up.

The game found both teams in good, but on the other hand quite different, moods. Newcastle were rested for FA Cup games at the weekend, while Crystal Palace were playing. However, after the 5-2 win over West Ham, the regeneration must have been nice.

And it showed as Crystal Palace dominated from the opening minute. Perhaps the best chance was missed by Eberechi Eze, who narrowly missed the right post. Newcastle could have been happy that the first half ended in a goalless draw.

The in-form Frenchman struck again

After the sides had changed sides, the home side had already found a way into the net, with a combination that adorned Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal. Frenchman Jean-Philippe Mateta collided with Jordan Ayew and then finished uncompromisingly late on.

Mateta added a second shot before the end and confirmed his terrific form, striking eight times in the last ten rounds and assisting once. He contributed two goals in the 5-2 triumph over the Hammers and has a 10+4 record in the Premier League this season.

A new coach who wants trophies

Crystal Palace are in decent form under new coach Oliver Glasner, winning 1: 0 at Anfield before topping West Ham. The Austrian coach is used to European Cups, having played them with LASK Linz, Wolfsburg and won the entire Europa League with Frankfurt.

The Eagles may not have cup ambitions until next season, and in this one they have a clueless Newcastle in the middle anyway. They currently have a two-point lead on eighth place, which is no longer cup position. That’s where West Ham are.
