Dortmund won their Champions League quarter-final rematch, beating Atlético Madrid 4-2 at home to advance to the top four teams of the tournament. Diego Simeone’s charges came back from 0:2 down, but were then broken by two goals conceded.

It started very roughly, Marcel Sabitzer had a chance from a small area in the third minute, but César Azpilicueta made an excellent block. On the other side, Álvaro Morata went alone at the goalkeeper, but missed with a lob.

After an intense five minutes, the game calmed down a bit and Atlético, as expected, lay back and waited for the breaks. Karim Adeyemi could have punished it in the 17th minute, but he only hit the centre of Jan Oblak’s goal from a volley.

Borussia still couldn’t properly test the Slovenian goalkeeper, but when they did, it was an immediate goal. Julian Brandt headed towards the near post from a great angle and Signal Iduna Park erupted for the first time in the match.

And four minutes later, it was two goals later, Ian Matsen heading to the back post from a similar position and Dortmund were ahead. The home side continued to press until the end of the first half, taking the 2:0 scoreline into the cabins with all ten men.

In the 51st minute, however, Athletic reduced the deficit, a header after a corner kick was unluckily knocked into his own net by Mats Hummels. Five minutes later, Atleti could have gone ahead again, but substitute Argentine Ángel Correa failed to score in front of the goalkeeper.

In the 64th minute, Correa succeeded when he sent the ball under the crossbar of the Dortmund goal twice. The shootout continued on the other side, with a precise header from hitman Nicolas Füllkrug making it 3:2. And two minutes after that, Dortmund struck for the fourth time.

Sabitzer shot from the edge of the box, Oblak stretched in vain. Ironically, Dortmund had a few more chances at the end, but they don’t have to regret it, because after a 5: 4 win they are through to the semi-finals.
