Leipzig won the preliminary match of the 26th Bundesliga round in Cologne 5:1. Both teams scored early in the first half, then two quick goals from Lois Openda made the difference. The favourite moved up to fourth place in the table.

Leipzig looked for a way to score for the first quarter of an hour, then Xavi Simons struck dangerously from the first and the visitors took the lead. And three minutes later, Sargis Adamyan shot to the left post, the goalkeeper had no chance.

In the 28th minute Lois Openda gave the visitors the lead back, but his shot could not stand due to an offside. The good passage of play continued with Dani Olmo’s finish which was cleared by the goalkeeper. Benjamin Šeško was also unsuccessful and missed the goal.

Cologne was absolutely harmless, but neither Olmo nor Benjamin Henrichs could find the back of the net. Šeško could have added an insurance before half-time, but he only hit the crossbar. Leipzig failed to score in the third minute of the setup as well, Openda shot just inside the box.

The game went to the stands at 1:1. The home side responded in the 54th minute, but Florian Kainz shot just wide of the target. His teammate Max Finkgrafe also failed to score, and he did not hit the target at all.

Leipzig launched a cannonade after the change of sides

In the 63rd minute, Leipzig took the lead, but the Belgian Openda broke the scoring deadlock with a shot into the middle of the net to make it 2-1. Three minutes later it was all over, this time Openda succeeded after a centre from defender David Raum.

Leipzig enjoyed the rest of the game, with Amadou Haïdara opening the net and club legend Yussuf Poulsen also netting in the end. He has been with the team since his days in the third division. He converted Henrichs’ centre and it was 5-1.

With this result, the match ended and Leipzig returned to the Top 4 for at least a few hours.
