Manchester City took an important step towards the title fight on Thursday night. Pep Guardiola’s side beat Brighton 4-0, but the Spanish strategist is still on alert. What did Guardiola say in his post-match interview?

The result was practically decided after the first half. In the 17th minute, the ageless Belgian star Kevin De Bruyne opened the scoring. Phil Foden added further goals in the 26th and 34th minutes and Manchester City led Brighton 3-0.

The Citizens were in full control of the game. In the first half alone, they produced nine shot attempts, with only three going between the three posts.

But those were the ones that ended in goals. The Citizens’ charm continued in the second half, although this time only one goal was scored. Twenty-four year old Julián Álvarez scored the first goal and Kyle Walker the second assist.

The Manchester club left nothing to chance and won 4-0 in Brighton. After 33 games played, the team has 76 points. Arsenal are only one point behind the leaders and Liverpool are two points behind third place.

Compared to the two rivals for the championship title, it also has one match to spare. However, Manchester coach Pep Guardiola warned in a post-match interview that although his team is in a favourable position to win the title, they still need to be vigilant.

Guardiola warns…

“Many things can still happen. What happened to Liverpool against Crystal Palace and Everton (two losses – ed.) can happen to us. It can happen to Arsenal too. No one is safe from it,” Guardiola said in an interview with Sky Sports.

“So be calm, be happy about today’s victory. The players are still in their heads, still focused. Now we just have to recover and think about the next game,” Guardiola tamed the excitement of a big win.

“We have been in a similar situation in the past. But that doesn’t mean that just because we’ve been through this it will happen again. We have to do things and go towards making it happen (winning the title),” the Manchester City coach added.
