Reinier Jesus is the name of the footballer for whom Real Madrid paid €30 million but never made it into the first team. Does he still have a chance to succeed like his compatriots who regularly feature in the starting line-up?

Real Madrid have taken a new route in their transfer strategy in recent years, bringing several Brazilian super-talents into their ranks for considerable money.

We can safely say that in the case of Vinícius Jr. and Rodrygo, this strategy has paid off. For the former, the Spanish big club shelled out €45 million and that was when he was just 16 years old.

Essentially the same story applies to Rodrygo. In both cases, Real Madrid had to wait for the moment when the footballer would celebrate his 18th birthday and be able to move to Europe.

Considerably worse was the transfer of Reinier, who may even have been forgotten by many. He too was set to become a future star of the club. Instead, he is wandering around on loan and his market price has fallen to the two million euro mark. That is a significant drop from the purchase price of €30 million.

After his arrival in the Spanish capital, he played for the B-team, where he played only three games and managed to score two goals. This was followed by a two-year loan spell at Borussia Dortmund.

It should have been the perfect destination for the promising youngster. Reinier was expected to get the necessary playing space to continue to develop his talent. However, this did not happen.

The Brazilian footballer never broke into the starting line-up and was mostly given opportunities from the bench. He even sat on the substitutes’ bench for many games in a row.

After returning back to the Spanish capital, he went on another guest appearance. This time he tried to play in the Spanish top league, where he wore the Girona jersey.

Even in this case we cannot talk about a successful tenure. Reinier got a chance in the starting line-up after two games spent among the substitutes. He appeared in three consecutive games and scored once. Then came the injury.

He was basically sick from last October to February. After his return, he made only two starts in the starting lineup.

After the end of the loan spell, Real Madrid decided what to do with the footballer. He didn’t even join the pre-season training and only in September he went on another loan to Frosinone, the newcomer of the Italian Serie A.

A big question mark hangs over his future. If the club’s management is counting on him, his best chance to make a name for himself will be next year, when Toni Kroos and Luka Modric will leave the White Ballet’s back line.

Otherwise, it will be a failed investment in the tens of millions of euros. Reinier, however, is still only twenty-one years old and has plenty of time to show that he deserves his place at the Santiago Bernabeu.
