The first Masters 1000 tournament played on clay didn’t start in an ideal way for the Czech spectators. Markéta Vondroušová, Marie Bouzková and Barbora Krejčíková found their defeats.
Markéta Vondroušová was the first to get into action. The WTA top ten player came up against Angelique Kerber, winner of the Australian Open and Wimbledon.
In the beginning of the match, the Czech star won her opponent’s serve, which gave her a break lead.
However, she also lost her serve and the fate of the first set was decided by a tiebreak, which the German won 7:5. Kerber was better in the second set and deservedly won 6: 1.
Petra Kvitova and Maria Bouzkova followed. One of the biggest favourites of the tournament won the first set 6: 2. The second set was much more even, but Bouzkova had to abandon the match due to injury.
Barbora Krejcikova also appeared on the courts today. It was expected that she could handle the duel with the Spanish Bados, but the opposite was true. The Czech lost 1::6 and 5::7.
The first round of the Madrid event will continue on Friday. Karolina Muchova will face Qiang Wang, while Karolina Pliskova will play against the extremely talented Cori Gauff.
Let’s hope the Czechs do better than they did today. You will be able to watch the matches on O2 TV Tennis.
