The Mutua Madrid Open belongs to the WTA Masters 1000 category, which includes eight other events. In the current season, it is the biggest tournament played on clay so far.
The tournament in Madrid will feature 64 players, which explains why the main competition will start on Thursday 29 April. The final match is then scheduled for Saturday 8 May.
The 2019 title will be defended by the Netherlands’ Kiki Bertens, who still can’t get back to her ideal form after an injury. She did not play in the Spanish capital last year due to the coronavirus pandemic.
As usual, we can look forward to a quality line-up in the current edition. Seven elite ten players have arrived in Madrid, including world number one Ashleigh Barty. Only Sofia Kenin, Bianca Andreescu and Serena Williams sent their excuses.
Of course, the biggest Czech stars will not be missing either. In the main competition we will find Karolina Pliskova, Marketa Vondrousova, Karolina Muchova, Maria Bouzkova and Barbora Krejcikova.
However, we must not forget Petra Kvitova, who will be playing the role of the tournament’s number nine. The thirty-one-year-old native of Bílovec has already won the Madrid tournament on three occasions.
