Ramos has returned to his beloved Sevilla, but the cauldron hates him. Why can’t the fans find a name for him?

It was one of the stories of the summer when Sergio Ramos turned down both Saudi Arabia and the US, where he would have taken 20 times more, and returned to his native Seville, the country that raised him. But that’s where the romantic story ends, because the cauldron called Biris Norte hates Ramos with all its soul.

Ramos started football in the small village of Camas, where he was born, five minutes from Seville. But at the age of 10, he went to Sevilla FC and went through the youth. He made a lot of friends with two teammates in particular – Jesús Navas and Antonio Puerta. Together they reached the youth team.

He made his A-team debut in February 2004 against Deportivo La Coruña. The next season, Ramos was already established at right back and played 41 games, scoring goals for Real Madrid, among others. It was Los Blancos who were so impressed by Ramos that in the summer of 2005 Florentino Pérez bought him for €27 million, the most expensive sum for a Spanish defender.

The betrayal of the president

And that brings us to the main problem. The main controversy was the president of Sevilla, José Maria Del Nido. When the fans revolted as to why he was letting the 19-year-old leave so early to save face, he blamed everything on Ramos and said he was doing everything he could to let him go.

Ramos didn’t really comment on it, as a teenager he didn’t want to go against the president, but after a few years he came out and said it wasn’t like that at all, that it was Del Nido who wanted to sell him because the club needed the money. But people didn’t want to understand that.

At Real Madrid, Ramos quickly caught on and slowly became one of the best stoppers in the world. The relationship with the Sevilla fans in the main stand remained relatively fine, but the hard core of the cauldron called “Biris Norte” never forgave him for leaving for Madrid.

Real are not exactly the favourite team in Sevilla, and Del Nido convinced the fans that Ramos was a traitor who wanted to leave at any cost. Thus, Ramos was booed and cursed at every visit, which bothered the Spanish stopper a lot, and he expressed how sorry he was several times, but he didn’t react on the pitch.

January 2017

But then came January 12, 2017, which changed everything. Real Madrid took on Sevilla in the Copa del Rey eighth-final. They won the first leg at home 3-0, and in the rematch they just had to keep an eye on the result. But there was a big drama. Sevilla went ahead, Asensio equalised, but Jovetic and Iborra gave Sevilla a 3-1 lead.

Sevilla’s cauldron took their anger out on Ramos and insulted the Real stopper throughout the match. They were chanting “Ramos you f***ing son of a bitch” or “Ramos is going to die”. But it wasn’t just him, it was his mother who was insulted, which was the stumbling block.

In the 82nd minute, Real had a penalty. It was kicked right in front of Biris Norte. Even before the execution, the boiler behind the goal was whistling and trying to disrupt Ramos. Ramos decided to take the penalty with a long, Panenka-style kick. After the goal, he ran in front of the Sevilla cauldron, whereupon huge insults and middle fingers rained down on him. Ramos pointed his thumbs at his back.

But that wasn’t all. Teammates ran up to him to celebrate the goal, Ramos then turned around, pointed towards Biris Norte, put his hands over his ears, turned around and pointed to his back again, then pointed towards the rest of the stands, indicating he was apologizing. Many fans in the main or opposite stand stood up and applauded Ramos, while the cauldron, on the other hand, booed and cursed tremendously.

I’ve been coming here for a long time and I don’t understand this reception. This will always be my home. Dani Alves or Ivan Rakitic came here, who didn’t breathe sevillismo since they were little like me, and they were received like gods.”

Towards his gesture, he said. I apologised to all but one part of the stadium. If one part of the stadium whistles at me from the first minute and insults my mother, I will not apologise to them for the goal. Those who insult my mother deserve no respect, sevillismo does.”

Return to

From then on, relations between the two sides were extremely tense and every time Ramos arrived at Ramón Sanchéz Pizjuán, hell awaited him.

That’s why Biris Norte were quite upset when they heard in the summer that Ramos was returning to Seville. He was rejected by the management all summer, only to be taken in after poor results.

But as you might expect, Biris Norte certainly didn’t welcome him with open arms. They issued a statement rejecting his arrival. In the statement, however, they rather leaned on the club’s management as they didn’t like bringing in someone who was so despised by Sevilla.

However, they also added that they would not insult Ramos or boo him during games. Logically, they will not support him either.
