Euro qualifying: Slovaks close to qualification, Wales back in the game
While Sunday’s Euro 2024 qualifier in Germany was full of surprises, this time everything went as expected. Both the Slovaks and the Portuguese shot, and several players from the Fortuna Liga were in action.
While Sunday’s Euro 2024 qualification in Germany was full of surprises, this time everything went as expected.
On Monday, only two qualification groups were played this time. Armenia squeezed the Croats at home in the final, but could not equalize at 1:1. Petar Musa came on for the visitors in the last minutes.
Wales led 1: 0 in Latvia for a long time and the home underdog surprisingly got angry, but David Brooks added an insurance goal from a break. With seven points, the islanders are now in fourth place, a point behind third-placed Armenia.
The Croats and Turks are tied on promotion with ten points, but the Balkan team has one match to play. The key match for both teams will be played in October, when the Croats host the Turks.
In the Slovakian group, it was a clear majority. In particular, the neighbours led from the first minute and by the sixth minute it was already 3:0. After that, the Slovaks took their foot off the gas a bit and kept the game under control.
Spartan Lukáš Haraslín and Michal Tomič of Slavia were the players of the starting line-up and after the change of sides, Lubomír Tupta of Liberec made his debut in the senior national team. Ivan Schranz remained on the bench.
The Portuguese team managed to beat the Luxembourgers even without Cristiano Ronaldo, with three two-goal scorers – Diogo Jota, Goncalo Ramos and Goncalo Inacio – scoring 9:0. Iceland beat Bosnia 1: 0 with a goal in the 92nd minute.
The clear victories kept both teams in the promotion places. The Portuguese are leading with 18 points and the Slovaks are five points behind. Luxembourg are third on ten points, Bosnia on seven and Iceland on six.
