Rafael Nadal’s return to the ATP circuit has been a reality for some time now. Novak Djokovic will be in Rome with him. They can thus continue the incredible streak they created at the Masters tournament in the Italian capital.

Nadal and Djokovic at the tournament

This year is without a clear leader. But both legends of the white sport are among the most watched players on the circuit. Both Nadal and Djokovic will be in Rome.

Djokovic last played a Masters tournament in Monte Carlo and, as usual this year, neither impressed nor offended. He finished in the semifinals there as well. He recorded the same result at the opening Grand Slam of the season in Australia.

Nadal is in a completely different position. Since his return to the courts, he has been improving tournament by tournament. In Barcelona he managed one match, in Madrid he won three times.

Now, for the first time in a long time, the two legends will meet in the same tennis event. Both big names of world tennis are on the bill for the last clay Masters of the season in Rome.

The unique series

From 2005 until last year, at least one of the Djokovic – Nadal pairing featured in every final clash in Rome. Moreover, six times the two tennis players have played together in the last match of the tournament.

The Spaniard triumphed ten times, while the Serbian tennis player six times. When Nadal made it to the final in the Eternal City, he was unbeatable. With the exception of Djokovic.

Every series comes to an end and this Roman one did not survive 2023. Djokovic fell to Holger Run in the quarter-finals. Nadal didn’t play practically all year last year.

This year, both players have the opportunity to add another year to their historic feat, albeit after a one-year hiatus. But Nadal will face a tough opponent in the second round if he advances. That’s Poland’s Hurkacz.

Djokovic has a much easier start to the tournament as the number one seed. He will enjoy a free draw in the first round and his biggest rivals Sinner and Alcaraz in the Eternal City are missing due to health reasons.
