Chelsea have picked themselves up under their new coach and they wanted to prove it on Tuesday night when they played Salzburg in the Champions League. A win could have secured their progression to the knockout stages and a goal from Kai Havertz took them closer to it.
So far, the Blues are looking good under their new coach. Graham Potter has brought a new impetus and tactical elements to the team, which have more or less been evident from the start. But the last two games have ended in draws only and Chelsea wanted to break it on Tuesday.
The London team was going to play at Red Bull Salzburg. On paper they were the favourites, but it is never easy against the Austrian hegemon. This was confirmed by the course of the match.
A three-point win would have meant Chelsea were assured of qualification for the Champions League knockout stages and Mateo Kovacic came close in the 23rd minute. But only his goal could not secure Chelsea the win.
At the beginning of the second half Junior Adamu equalised at 1-1 and it could have been worse. The youngsters from the Austrian team were threatening, they were dangerous. However, in the 64th minute, the star from neighbouring Germany showed them how it should be done.
Kai Havertz did not spare anyone. No one can doubt his technique and he confirmed its quality against Salzburg. His shot from outside the penalty area had perfect parameters and the opposing goalkeeper could only watch.
