Chelsea put in a very good performance at Villa Park on Wednesday and deservedly enjoyed their progress to the FA Cup eight-finals. Coach Mauricio Pochettino, who has been the subject of a wave of criticism following recent results, was also pleased with the performance.

The league woes continue. If we look at the Premier League table, we see that Chelsea are only in eleventh position with 31 points. Moreover, with a negative score and they are certainly not used to that at Stamford Bridge.

The positive news for Argentine coach Pochettino is at least the cup results. In the EFL Cup, the Blues took on Newcastle or Brighton and at the end of February they will play the final against Tottenham at Wembley.

The game at Villa Park

Chelsea are also still in contention in the FA Cup, the oldest club competition. They knocked out Aston Villa, the fourth team in the current Premier League season, in the round of 16.

The west London team put in a great performance, taking the lead in the eleventh minute thanks to a Conor Gallagher goal. Ten minutes later, Senegalese striker Nicolas Jackson also scored.

After the change of sides, Enzo Fernandez added an exhibition goal from a free-kick. The Villans only had to adjust the score to 3-1 in the second half. Unaia Emery’s side lost only their third home game in all competitions this season.

Reaction by Pochettino

“I think we gave one of our best performances all season, we played against a very strong opponent. Aston Villa did a great job and deservedly they are in fourth place,” Pochettino told the club’s website after the game.

“I think we dominated and we were the better team. It’s a great reaction to the Wolves game. We took the right approach and fought for each other. It’s important to create the right energy between the fans, the club and the players,” added the 11-year-old coach.
