Manchester United failed to reach the Champions League eight-final rematch and after a 0:1 defeat to Atlético Madrid they are out of the most prestigious club competition. Just like last year, we will not see Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi in the Champions League quarter-finals.

Anthony Elanga had the first big chance in the 13th minute, but his shot from a small area was headed out by Jan Oblak. On the other side, Rodrigo de Paul tried his hand, but David de Gea headed his attempt away for a corner.

In the 25th minute, Diogo Dalot took the ball from outside the box but only hit the centre of the visitors’ goal. Eight minutes later Atleti dismantled the Red Devils’ defence and Joao Felix opened the scoring, but the goal was disallowed due to offside.

In the 40th minute, a regulation goal was scored. A cross from the right side found Renan Lodi, who headed the ball past de Gea. Bruno Fernandes scored in stoppage time, but Oblak made a good save and it was 0:1.

After the change of sides, Elanga and de Paul shot, in the first case the attempt missed the goal, in the second one de Gea had an easy job.

After that, it was a long wait for a bigger opportunity until Oblak scored a brilliant double in the 77th minute. First he reflexively cleared a header from Raphael Varane, then he caught an acrobatic finish from Cristiano Ronaldo.

Five minutes later, an active Dalot shot, this time missing the space between the three posts. No more happened and Atletico went through to the quarter-finals with a 2-1 win.
