Day of Reckoning? Where! More of a tragicomedy
It was supposed to be a day of reckoning, but it turned out to be more of a romantic evening of hugging followed by crying. But the strong words and aggression in the cage, with a plastic barrier between the two protagonists, certainly didn’t translate to the ring.
On one side of the ring, the still undefeated brother of a famous boxing legend. And against him, a world-famous British youtuber and rapper who has been dabbling in the world of boxing in recent years.
The fight was preceded by a heated press conference and an entertaining staredown at Wembley Arena in London. In it, both men stood in the cage and spat fire at each other through a plastic barrier. The latter had a lot of work to do to keep it from cracking after punches from not only both fighters, but also from John Fury’s father, who took both protagonists of the show with his fists and head.
The fight itself, which was seen by the Manchester Arena last night, was then preceded by a fight between the elder of the Paul brothers, Logan, and controversial fighter Dillon Danis. As expected, the bout ended in a disqualification of Conor McGregor’s training partner after a lacklustre performance, with Paul claiming the win.
But if the arena crowd were expecting a better sporting performance in the main event, they must have been disappointed with the way the fight went. The first round brought more action than the entire fight combined.
Fury may have won the fight, but it was definitely not about boxing
Right from the opening bell, Fury went at his opponent with vigor, but the initial pressure didn’t bring any serious threat. Instead, KSI landed a hard right hook that rocked his opponent. But that was all we got to see from a boxing perspective that night.
From the second round onwards, Fury took the reins and at least made a minimal effort to box. But KSI was tying up his rival and the fans got a lackluster spectacle played out in the clinch most of the time.
In the second round, the ring official deducted a point from Fury for punches to the back of the head. But the clearly frustrated boxer from a famous boxing family didn’t have much choice. KSI kept his opponent constantly in the clinch, holding his opponent close with his left hand and pressing his head against Fury’s right shoulder.
And that’s the picture we actually saw for the rest of the fight. KSI was practically banking on one punch, after which he always hung onto Fury. The latter tried to dot his opponent from the retreat, but he was virtually unable to do that and eventually conceded the game to his opponent.
Even so, the scoring judges awarded the win by scores of 57-56, 57-56 and 57-57 to Tommy Fury, who remains undefeated. The judges’ decision caused huge resentment on the losing side.
“Stealing, ” KSI said right in the ring about the judges’ verdict. “How many punches did you land? You didn’t hit anything. I want to appeal. That’s outrageous. I feel like I won it,” he lamented.
Although both men showed no boxing skills whatsoever, KSI showed virtually nothing besides tying up every few seconds in the fight and the only one who wanted to fight was his opponent. However, if Fury really wants to fight for world titles, performances like that and fights with opponents like that won’t help his career much.
