West Ham lost 1:3 to Brighton in the 38th round of the Premier League on Sunday and will only play in the Conference Europa League next season. Hammers fans were also upset by Vladimir Coufal’s message, through which he hinted at leaving.

West Ham were still leading 1:0 at half-time thanks to Michail Antonio, but after the change of sides they quickly conceded and did not manage to finish the game at all. In the 80th minute Pascal Gross turned the tide and Danny Welbeck made it 3:1.

The Hammers’ loss to the underdog was all the more disappointing as Manchester United were no match for Crystal Palace and West Ham would have jumped to sixth place if they had won. That leaves them two points adrift of seventh place and facing Europa League Conference qualification.

The loss to Brighton has set off coach David Moyes, who criticised his charges for their performance. The players subsequently apologised to fans on social media. Coufal sent them the following message. “Last game of the season, we are not happy with the performance, there is still a lot of work to do. Hope to see you next season.”

The text made Hammers fans uneasy, taking the last sentence as a sign that Coufal could leave in the summer. Fans of the London club have grown to love the Czech defender over the past two seasons, and even a less than successful second season hasn’t changed that.

Coufal has been plagued by injuries and in the winter he was pushed out of the line-up by Ben Johnson, a young, promising defender and an Englishman to boot. Therefore, it would not be surprising if Moyes gave Johnson a chance from the new season. In any case, Coufal’s contract expires in the summer of 2023.
