According to Washington Hockey Now, the president of the Kontinental Hockey League, Alexei Morozov, has approached the NHL with a request for KHL teams to play in exhibition games with overseas teams.

Given the ongoing war in Ukraine, this proposal may seem almost arrogant. The current political situation simply does not allow for anything like this to happen.

In fact, in a recent interview with Match TV, the president of the Kontinental Hockey League, Alexei Morozov, expressed his wish for KHL clubs to play exhibition games with NHL teams to measure each other’s strength.

“We wanted our clubs to play against NHL teams. This task has been set by the management, we want to meet NHL teams. And the NHL is interested in hosting these games, ” Morozov said in the interview.

“We would like the Dynamo to play, for example, Washington. We’re interested in NHL clubs with a lot of Russian stars. But NHL clubs have their own plans. Their league starts later – in October. That’s why we postponed these talks,” he added.

But nothing like that will happen anytime soon. It should be noted, Morozov also clarified in the interview that the talks with the NHL were only postponed, not completely broken off.

As Washington Hockey Now has already specified, games between the teams of both competitions would not be news anyway. Although it’s been a long 13 years since the last meeting.

In 2010, two games were played overseas as part of the NHL’s preseason preparations, with the then Phoenix Coyotes and Carolina Hurricanes facing Dinamo Riga and SKA St. Petersburg, respectively.

The Coyotes won 3:1, with the Czech forwards Petr Průcha, Radim Vrbata and Martin Hanzal scoring the difference goal. The Hurricanes, on the other hand, fell to their opponent 3:5.
