Liverpool won their league match at Nottingham, after an evenly contested game, 1:0. Manchester City must beat them in a week if they want to leapfrog them in the table. Nottingham have a four-point lead on the relegation zone.
Liverpool in a health crisis started with stopper Joe Gomez in the middle of the midfield, Bobby Clark made his debut in the Premier League, he also in the midfield. And the opening minutes were even, with no shots on either side.
Divock Origi sent the first shot from the edge of the area, against his former team, just missing the target. Luis Diaz fired from a similar position on the other side, but the Colombian’s low shot was knocked down by the stopper for a corner.
He then ran at goalkeeper Anthony Elang alone, but the Reds goalkeeper pulled up against his shot. At the other end, Clark tried his luck but missed. In the 26th minute, it was defender Murillo who shone as he knocked Diaz’s goal away for a corner.
The rest of the first half didn’t offer any more chances, the game remained evenly matched and the match deservedly went into the cabins at 0:0.
Liverpool grabbed the 3 points at the end
The biggest chance of the game so far came in the 49th minute when Andrew Robertson scored. His attempt was on target, but an excellent defensive save was pulled off by Irish stopper Andrew Omobamidele. After that the game settled down until in the 63rd minute substitute Darwin Nunez shot from an angle but only into the side netting of Matz Sels’ goal.
At the other end, Elanga finished a neat combination but just missed the back post. Cody Gakpo was also unsuccessful, and like Núñez, he hit the side netting. And the Reds’ third striker failed as well, with Diaz heading wide from outside the box.
Nottingham could have won it too, but Callum Hudson Odoi’s shot was caught by the keeper at the near post. The finish was tense on both sides of the pitch, with the home defence in particular in control, cashing in on a header from Núñez in the last minute of stoppage time.
This leaves the Reds leading the competition by four points, with Nottingham four points clear of the relegation zone.
