The Oktagon had a tournament in Manchester, where the flyweight title was to be defended. But Elias Garcia is avoiding another fight and promoter Ondrej Novotny has warned him that if he does not defend by the April tournament in Birmingham, others will get the chance.

With his arrival in the UK, Oktagon has decided to revive the men’s division. This is at under 51kg and there really aren’t many in our waters who could compete in it.

So the first two fighters went straight for the belt. Surprisingly, the latter came out victorious from the fight between Aaron Aby and Elias Garcia, the reason being a doctor’s stoppage. Until then, Aby was the better fighter.

Garcia couldn’t have been that happy with his title shot. A rematch was expected, Aby was very much in the running for it, but he got wriggled out by his opponent. So we only saw Aby at the Manchester tournament in January.

After a three-round battle, he defeated the experienced American Chris Daniele on points to claim a title shot. Promoter Ondřej Novotný promised at the press conference afterwards that Aby will get it.

Novotny on the flyweight title in Oktagon

“I like all our fighters, but with some it’s just more difficult. Garcia had a bad feeling about the last tournament in Manchester. I understand that not everything was perfect. Garcia unfortunately had problems with traveling to England, which we didn’t even know about.

We almost managed to arrange a rematch, but it didn’t work out in the end. Plus, the first fight was recent, so I understand. But he has to be here in April and if he’s not, he’ll lose the title, that’s for sure.

To fight for the title. Ideally with Garcia, but if he can’t or there’s some other problem, he’ll fight someone else for the vacant title,” Novotny said at the press conference after the last tournament.

So that he doesn’t have to worry, he has a title shot for sure. But Garcia has two options, either he goes with Abe for the title or he loses it and quite possibly won’t get a title shot right away afterwards.
