Carvajal describes what ended his constant injuries. I stopped eating gluten, it changed everything
Dani Carvajal has long been one of the best right-backs in the world. When fit, he is unbeatable in defence and excellent in attack. But it is his top form that has been missing for a long time, as he was often injured. But that’s over now.
Dani Carvajal has long been one of the best right-backs in the world. When fit, he is unbeatable in defence and excellent in attack. But it is his top form that has been missing for a long time, as he was often injured. But that’s over now.
He’s a great example of how Real Madrid would want to nurture their offspring. Dani Carvajal came through La Fábrica’s academy from a young age, and when he matured, he left on a transfer to Bayer Leverkusen, where he played so well all season that Real immediately exercised the buy-back clause after a year and brought Carvajal back to the Bernabéu.
At first, he fought for a place with Álvaro Arbela, but soon conquered the right-back position all to himself. When fit, Carvajal is always one of the best full-backs in the world.
But poor health is a big problem for the quick-footed Spaniard. Not once at Real could he play a whole season in a row without injury, managing 22, 23, 24 or 25 league games in a season. He has only struck in at least 30 La Liga games three times in 11 seasons.
Moreover, in the 2020/21 season, Carvajal had such problems that he only played 13 games. At that point, it seemed that Carvajal’s days were numbered and Real Madrid would have to slowly look for a new fullback.
But the Leganés native kicked on, got back into form, and especially in the spring of 2022, when Real won La Liga and the Champions League, we watched the old Carvajal again.
At the start of 2023, injury struck again, sidelining the 31-year-old midfielder for the whole of January. Los Blancos fans once again feared the worst, only for Carvajal to hold on since then and play the entire spring without injury.
Moreover, he has become the new captain of the Spanish national team, giving Real no reason to bring in a new right-back. He has played almost everything so far in the new season, playing the full 90 minutes in the first three games, only coming on as a substitute in the 75th minute against Getafe, and against Georgia he again managed a full game for Spain.
And what’s the reason for that? Carvajal has a logical explanation. “I stopped eating gluten. That was the key, it changed everything. The injuries suddenly stopped,” Carvajal said in an interview with Movistar.
