When Real Madrid dominated La Liga and the Champions League in May, it seemed like the pinnacle. But Carlo Ancelotti’s team is just getting going, the only one of the Top 5 leagues to win every competitive game in the new season and experiencing their best start to a season in 54 years.

Eight games, eight wins. That’s Real Madrid’s record this year. The defending Champions League champions have dominated all competitive matches with a 22:5 record. They are the only team in the top five leagues that hasn’t lost a point.

2::0 vs Frankfurt – Super Cup
2::1 vs Almería – La Liga
4::1 vs Celta Vigo – La Liga
3::1 vs Espanyol – La Liga
2::1 vs Betis – La Liga
3::0 vs Celtic – Champions League
4::1 vs Mallorca – La Liga
2::0 vs Leipzig – Champions League

Los Blancos really don’t remember such a good start to the season. The last time Real Madrid were unbeaten at the start of a season was in 1968/69 when they won their first eleven games under coach Miguel Muñoz.

Real did exactly the same in the 1961/62 season. If Carlo Ancelotti wants to break the record, he needs to win the next four games. But that will not be easy.

Sunday’s derby with Atlético Madrid at the Wanda Metropolitano. But after that, there are games against Osasuna in La Liga, Shakhtar in the Champions League and Getage in the league.

Ancelotti’s tactics are clear. “I didn’t ask the players to play nice football, I asked them to win,” he told a press conference, making it clear what really matters in football. And indeed, Real Madrid do not always play pretty football, as was the case last season when they were often the worse team in the Champions League knockout stages.

But Modric and co. almost always manage to find a way to win. There is a tremendous mental strength in the team that helps the team to decide games in the last minutes.

“My big advantage is that all the players in the team are Madridistas, that’s why they play with such enthusiasm,” Ancelotti said.
