Barcelona continues to sell off its future. Laporta sells another 15% of TV rights for 25 years

Barcelona is in a critical situation. Due to huge debts, the club had practically no money for transfers, but the team was very uncompetitive. So president Joan Laporta decided to sell off the club’s future for current transfers.

Barcelona’s economic situation is still improving. But only for a short time. The club sold another 15% of the television rights to Sixth Street for 25 years. With this deal, the Culés will receive 400 million euros.

Barcelona already sold 10% of the TV rights to the same company a few weeks ago, so Sixth Street will own 25% of the TV rights of one of the biggest clubs in the world for 25 years.

Barcelona itself officially announced this on the web and social media. ” We continue to pursue our strategy and are thrilled to have completed this deal with Sixth Street, which provides us with a significant increase in our financial strength,” announced club president Joan Laporta.

Barcelona have already spent over 100 million euros of the money they have already received, bringing 25-year-old Raphinha from Leeds for 65 million euros and 33-year-old Lewandowski from Bayern for another 50 million euros.

This money collected is to be used to buy Jules Kounde, for whom Sevilla are demanding at least 70 million euros. The Catalans are still trying to acquire Marcos Alonso and César Azpilicueta from Chelsea.

Thanks to this operation, Barcelona have at least some actual funds to operate with. However, everything is not as rosy as it may seem at first glance, as its revenues will drop by 25% over the next 25 years. And, as is well known, income from television rights is one of the most important revenues.

At the same time, this may create a problem with the salary cap, which Barcelona is already struggling with. La Liga sets it on the basis of the club’s performance, and since the Culés will receive 25% less from TV rights, this could mean a further reduction in the salary cap in the future.
