Spain was in mourning on Tuesday morning. News came from Madrid that Paco Gento, one of Real Madrid’s greatest legends, had died at the age of 88.
Gento is the only footballer in history to have won six Copas de Europa, the forerunner of the Champions League. He was currently the honorary president of Real Madrid, a position he inherited from his great friend Alfredo di Stéfano.
Both icons of Los Blancos have helped make the royal club a machine in both Spanish and European football. Together, they achieved five European Cups in a row, something no one else has done.
Gento ended his career after the 1970-71 season with 23 official titles as a Real Madrid player, making history with this record-breaking feat. Until now, no one has surpassed him, only Marcelo matched him on Sunday by winning the Super Cup.
“Real Madrid C.F., its president and its board of directors deeply regret the death of Francisco Gent, honorary president of Real Madrid and one of the greatest legends of our club and world football.
Real Madrid would like to express its condolences and its love and affection to his wife Mari Luz, his sons Francisco and Julio, his granddaughters Aitana and Candela and all his relatives, colleagues and loved ones,” the royal club wrote in a statement.
Real Madrid also bid farewell to one of its greatest legends by commemorating all his titles.
