Robert Lewandowski won the award for the best footballer on the planet for the past year at The Best FIFA Football Awards gala on Monday night. However, he was somewhat surprised by the way Lionel Messi was voted in the poll. What did he have to say about his choices?

Lionel Messi won his seventh Ballon d’Or in December, followed by Robert Lewandowski in second place. Not everyone agreed. Not a few experts or fans saw the Polish goal scorer as the clear winner.

The Argentine himself said at the ceremony that Lewandowski was an outstanding footballer, praising his performances not only in 2021 but also in 2020, in which Messi thought he deserved to win the Ballon d’Or.

However, what surprised the football public even more was how the PSG star voted in The Best FIFA Football Awards. Although the award went to Lewandowski, who made up for not winning the Ballon d’Or, Messi did not include him in his vote at all.

The living legend of Barcelona placed Neymar in first place, Kylian Mbappé was placed second and Karim Benzema earned third place for the Argentine.

Lewandowski himself placed Messi in second place behind Jorginho in his vote. His omission from Messi’s list surprised him.

“He said nice words at the Ballon d’Or ceremony. As for his current vote, I hope I haven’t done anything wrong outside of sporting matters that he might be angry with me about. I respect his choice, you should ask him about it,” Lewandowski said at the press conference.

However, the Polish sharpshooter is not angry with Messi, nor does he want to say anything negative about him.
