Tottenham have parted ways with Nuno Espirito Santo two days after a 0:3 home loss to Manchester United. The Portuguese lasted only four months on the Spurs bench. He not only failed to score points with the team, but also failed to impress with his play.
Fans were often dissatisfied with the performance of their eleven and in the last match there were even expressions of disapproval in the form of booing and booing.
Immediately after Santo’s departure, and in the case of some media even before him, the name of Italian coach Antonio Conte began to be bandied about. It is he who is expected to be the successor to the sacked coach and become the fourth Tottenham coach in three years.
According to Fabrizio Romano, a reliable source mapping the events in the prestigious football leagues, an agreement between the club’s management and Conte is on track. Negotiations are coming to a successful conclusion, although nothing can be said officially at the moment.
However, Conte is currently negotiating his salary and contract length, but it should be a long-term deal. That would only benefit Tottenham, given the turnover of managers in recent years.
Conte is an experienced coach, he already has valuable experience with English football. In his very first season on the Chelsea FC bench, he managed to win the title, which only three other coaches before him managed to do. In his second season he won the FA Cup, but his neck was broken by a fifth place finish in the league.
This was followed by a spell at Inter Milan, from which he decided to leave in May this year. Although he led the club to the Serie A title, he was not going to agree to director Steven Zhang’s demand to start saving not only on the squad but also on his salary. Conte has been without a contract since May.
That could change very quickly. Tottenham’s next game is on Sunday at Everton. If Conte was on the Spurs bench, many of the club’s fans would surely cheer.
