The Pirate finally gets his big chance. He will replace Karlos Vemola in the fight with Marcin Naruszczka and will fight for the interim title.
The interim champion title is the reason why the Oktagon organization has faced a lot of criticism. Even Kristofich himself was disapproving, not afraid to use words like circus or nonsense.
But Ondrej Novotny explained it not only to him, but also to the fans publicly in the MMA podcast Flight Through the World.
“Karlos Vémola was the champion and lost his title because of a few grams. The moment I knew Karlos’ start could be in danger, I approached Attila Vegh with an offer for the Pirate,” Novotny began his explanation.
“Before that, I called Naruszek and told him that there was a risk. They immediately told me that they wanted to go for at least the interim title, there was no talk at all about the title as such. Everybody in the 84kg division recognizes that they won’t be a real champion until they beat Karlos Vemola,” added the Octagon promoter.
Attila Végh, who represents the Pirate, agreed. Kristofich, however, said in the podcast that he hasn’t discussed it with Attila in any way. Even after the explanation, however, he does not agree with the provisional title.
However, he takes it as a checkpoint and proof that he is on the right track. Novotny then admitted that he wanted to prepare the Pirate for the title match with progressively difficult matches. He feels comfortable with that now and feels like everything is falling into place.
The regular middleweight title should be more clear in nine months.
