Reigning welterweight champion Kaik Brito has left the Octagon, deciding to heed the lure of the UFC and head to Contender. Promoter Ondrej Novotny has now weighed in on the situation and admitted that he doesn’t really understand the Brazilian as he would have given him better terms.

There was quite a stir when he beat David Kozma in early December. After all, for a long time he was the only fighter who managed to beat the Pink Panther.

The reason was supposed to be an injured hand, however, there was also speculation that it was more to avoid being obligated to stay in the Octagon in case of an offer from the UFC.

Brito was supposed to defend the title later in the year, but that will not happen. The UFC offered him to be a part of Contender and since he had that included in his contract, he could leave the Octagon.

“Brito is the exception I left in there. His managers convinced him, but he’s like a little kid. He always told me when we signed the contract that he doesn’t give a shit about anything else, but he just wants to leave the UFC and Contender there.

I said I’d leave it there until he was champion, but he kept going. I told him that he’d have a lot more money with me as champion than if he went to the UFC, not to mention through Contender, where he’d get five thousand dollars. But he talked me into it in that sympathetic way of his that he’s been dreaming about since he was a kid.

So we finally said yes. If that’s all his world is built on, then that’s what we’ll do. He’ll get his shot, and I wish him well. It’s a good thing when a man fulfills his boyhood dreams. I hope it comes true for him,” said Ondrej Novotny on MMA Flight Through the World.
