Russia’s war in Ukraine continues and is also affecting neighbouring countries. One of them is Georgia, where there are massive protests.

These were caused by a new law passed by the pro-Russian parliament there on Tuesday. The legislation is reminiscent of that introduced by Vladimir Putin’s regime to eliminate its critics.

It requires NGOs and media outlets that are at least partly funded from abroad to register as agents of foreign influence.

The Ministry of Justice would then have an overview of income and expenditure and thus defacto control the content under threat of heavy fines.

Police have arrested dozens of opponents and one of them, according to information available to the private TV company Mtavari Arkhi, was Mate Sanikidze.

“I’ d rather fight in Europe for free than in Russia for a billion! “The future of Georgia is in Europe

“My husband was detained at a demonstration last night because he stood up for our nation and expressed his wish for Georgia to join the European Union rather than Russia. I am very proud of him and cannot wait to see him again. Please express your support for him as well,” his wife wrote on Instagram.

Sanikidze is scheduled to fight for the organization’s title at the end of April, and his opponent will be Losene Keita, who he verbally sparred with at Friday’s Octagon TIME press conference.
