You’re gonna explain this to us! Pioli is the target of criticism after the Milan derby, the club’s management invited him on the carpet
It was supposed to be a big and above all even match. And of course it was a big match, but we can’t talk about evenness at all. Inter defeated AC 5-1, and of course the coach Stefano Pioli was criticized and went to the carpet after the match.
It was supposed to be a big and above all even match. And of course it was a big match, but we can’t talk about evenness at all. Inter defeated AC 5-1, and of course the coach Stefano Pioli was criticized and went to the carpet after the match.
It was one of the highlights of the whole football weekend, a match that not only Italy was looking forward to. But Saturday’s Derby della Madonnina produced a shocking result, with Inter decimating AC by five goals and clearly dominating the Milan derby.
The Nerazzurri had already scored the first goal when Henrik Mkhitaryan slotted home quite easily in the fifth minute. Inter then understandably pulled back and let Stefano Pioli’s charges play, who created two or three really big chances in the first half hour.
However, none of them ended up in the net, so instead Simone Inzaghi’s charges struck on the break. The new summer signing Marcus Thuram scored beautifully.
Rafael Leão gave the Rossoneri hope in the 57th minute, but AC Milan’s 1:2 scoreline didn’t last long. In the 69th minute, Mkhitaryan scored his second goal of the game, again quite easily. AC’s defence was not really working in this match.
Milan practically stopped playing after the third goal, so Inter made their fans very happy twice more. Ten minutes later, Hakan Calhanoglu converted a penalty kick and Davide Frattesi scored in injury time.
A big criticism of Pioli
So AC Milan lost their fifth derby in a row, and in the same way they lost the two previous recent derbies. And this is exactly the direction in which the criticism of the Italian press has been directed.
“Changing everything after four derby losses and losing the fifth one even more crushingly than the previous ones hurts. Instead of discontinuity, we saw Mkhitaryan send the ball into the net unchallenged and Milan suffer again,” writes La Gazzetta dello Sport.
Other Italian media outlets, including Corriere dello Sport and Tuttosport, have written similar opinions. Needless to say, Pioli was summoned to the club’s management after the match, whereupon he will have to explain the lost derby in such a way.
