Will Oktagon come to the UK? It is one of the possibilities, sounds from the leadership of the organization
islands? it’s certainly one of the options we are looking at, but it’s not a necessity… it’s a different market, the sport is differently known there… it’s one of the options
The Octagon is slowly but surely becoming a world organization. After the expansion to Germany, it is not impossible that it could move to other parts of the world. One possibility is obviously the UK.
Octagon MMA is an established brand in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. It has virtually no competition, although some organisations are trying to make it so. This is clearly evident from the attendance at tournaments, but also the viewership on social media or platforms such as YouTube.
For some time, the organisation has been toying with the idea of expanding abroad. However, also due to the coronavirus pandemic, this idea had to wait. But finally we have arrived.
Earlier this year, there was already talk that Oktagon might head to Germany. At a big press conference in Ostrava it was officially announced. Frankfurt was to host the first tournament.
And that’s exactly what happened. And it was at the famous Festhalle, which was sold out. It was a big deal for the German MMA scene. In addition, Oktagon entered the market with the continuation of the reality show Oktagon Challenge, this time with German fighters.
In addition, Oktagon will be returning to Frankfurt later this year when the tournament takes place there in October. But the expansion abroad doesn’t have to end there. The organization’s owners Pavol Neruda and Ondřej Novotný are already looking elsewhere.
They recently visited a gym in Ireland that is home to Conor McGregor. In addition, Octagon has taken a liking to his trainer John Kavanagh, who also trains Lucie Pudilova. Besides, Novotny and Neruda visited London Shootfighters.
So the press conference was open to asking about the direction of further expansion and whether the UK or Ireland was in play. The reaction? “It’s certainly one of the options we’re looking at. But it’s not a necessity. It’s a different market, the sport is known differently there. It’s one of the options,” Neruda told a press conference.
