What the Premier League is all about: Chelsea have more signings than wins, Everton relegated

Why isn’t it worth writing off Newcastle’s mocked signing Anthony Gordon and how much can Everton’s inactivity in the transfer market hurt?

Why isn’t it worth writing off Newcastle’s derided signing Anthony Gordon and how much can Everton’s inactivity in the transfer market hurt? We’ll discuss that, along with Chelsea’s transfer policy, in the second part of a new weekly feature in which we break down the interesting things that are going on among English football fans.

Gordon has drawn ridicule

To be honest, I was surprised at how much criticism and slander was heaped on Anthony Gordon during speculation about his move to Newcastle. Everton fans were making him out to be the worst player ever, while I had his great moments from the first part of this season stuck in my head. However, they can be understood, as the young speedster forced his way out.

The taunts gradually caught on and were spread by Newcastle fans who didn’t like the price tag of over 45 million euros. The main argument? As a winger, Gordon has so far received as many yellow cards (10) in the Premier League as he has collected in total goals and assists (7+3).

Yes, that’s food for thought, anyway Gordon is 21 years old, plays for the England U21 national team and has played all of 42 league rounds. He has a very good right-footed shot from the edge of the box and always leaves 100 per cent on the pitch when pressing. It is not fair to write him off.

Chelsea are strengthening more than they are winning

Just like in the summer, Chelsea dominated the transfer market in the winter months. Some of its moves have been surprising to the point of being nonsensical, such as the sale of Jorginho to Arsenal for “pennies” and the subsequent purchase of Enzo Fernandez for a record 121 million euros. Of course, it’s an investment in the future, but the Italian European champion left for a tenth of the price of Fernandez.

Mykhaylo Mudryk also cost a considerable sum and I could go on. But Chelsea’s high sums are just boring the world. But it says it all that the Blues have bought more players since the summer (16) than they have won competitive games (12).

Everton really will fall

For perhaps the first time since the start of this dreadful season, which unfortunately for the Toffees is replicating last year’s, Everton are realistically being linked with relegation to the Championship in England. So far, looking and the squad, everyone has said that this team simply cannot be relegated. However, the departure of Gordon and the dreadful performances in January have changed a lot of that.

Everton called up Sean Dyche on a rescue mission, but the champions failed to bring in a single reinforcement. Instead, he sold Gordon, who was an ideal fit at right wing in his favoured 4-4-2 formation.

Quite simply, everything goes against Everton in such a way that even individuals of the calibre of Demarai Gray, Dominic Calvert-Lewin or Jordan Pickford may not guarantee salvation. And relegation would be a huge shame and a disaster financially, no need to go into that.
