Oktagon has another tournament behind it, this time at sold out Štvanica. There were some great fights and some of the results really make you wonder what kind of fights could be coming. What duels are on offer?
Have the two title fights been decided?
Macek has called for a rematch
Filip Macek, who had already started on the prelims card, was introduced to the fans at Štvanica. He was not expecting an easy fight, but the phenomenal performance of the Czech fighter made it an easy fight, at least on the surface.
In fact, Macek took on Mikael Silander, who has experience from, for example, the Russian ACA, where among other things he defeated Tomas Deák, Macek’s former Oktagon title fight conqueror.
The Czech fighter asked for another title fight, which would be his third. And the fact is, no one else deserves it. Macek would like to show that he can handle big and important fights. The champion Jonas Magard is in favor of the rematch and nothing seems to prevent it.
Legierski has shown progress
Another fighter who has asked for a title fight is Mateusz Legierski. The Pole became the first lightweight champion in 2020 when he defeated Miroslav Strybak on points in a title fight. He then went on to try his luck in KSW, where he won once and lost once.
But he’s been on the losing end here. From Legierski’s various statements it is clear that he had health problems that caused his defeat in KSW. But now he is fit and wants to become the lightweight king of the Octagon again. He gave an absolutely dominant and sovereign performance against Matthew Kohout.
He allowed Kohout virtually nothing in the stand-up. Moreover, he showed that he is not afraid of fighting on the ground, where he has been tested in KSW. Basically, no one deserves a lightweight title fight more than him. So Losene Keita has apparently learned the name of his first challenger.
Will we finally see a Czechoslovakian talent fight?
Roman Paulus took on Polish talent Dawid Kareta at Štvanica and managed to win on points. This is a fight that was talked about quite a bit not so long ago. Paulus could potentially face Czech talent Jakub Tichota.
Tichota has recently been linked to a fight with Mat Sanikidz in particular, with the idea that it would be a fight for the interim title amidst an injury to champion Ivan Buchinger. Featherweight Losene Keita, however, would also like to try out.
The reason why the battle between Tichota and Paulus didn’t work out for now was simple. Paulus has so far been supposed to be the underdog against Tichota. The fact is that even against Kareta his performance was not that dominant, but he scored a valuable scalp and the fight with Tichota simply makes more and more sense.
Kertész vs. Velickovic 2? Why not?
Welterweight is extremely stacked. Moreover, the champion David Kozma is very active and another defence awaits him in December. But if he makes it, what could be next for him?
Potentially a rematch between Máté Kertész and Bojan Velickovic, which would give either fighter another chance to beat Kozma. Kertész has now beaten Kanchev, who among other things, lost to Velickovic earlier.
Kanchev has proven to be a great fighter, so he can stir up the welterweight waters. However, Kertész has shown his qualities, his maturity and his complexity. He lost to Velickovic in a very controversial way. He was close to a third fight with Kozma. And he definitely deserved it.
So a rematch with Velickovic makes sense. But there are other names on the table, namely the German one. David Zawada or Christian Eckerlin could be interesting opponents for the future.
Will Vémola really try the heavyweight division?
Karlos Vémola won the welterweight title by defeating Aleksandar Ilic as expected. To silence his critics and doubters, he offered to fight at heavyweight. He wants to prove that he is not afraid of anyone.
The fact is that he was indirectly challenged by Jeremy Kimball. Vemola has also hinted at a fight with Hatef Moeil. Earlier he wanted to fight Martin Buday, who is now in the UFC. Will we see the day when The Terminator actually steps up at heavyweight?
