The quarter-final between the Czech Republic and Denmark is slowly approaching. Both teams will arrive in Baku on Thursday and will try their best to tune up for Saturday’s challenge. The winner goes through to the semi-finals of the European Championship, which is a huge challenge! For our national team, it would mean matching the legendary Euro 2004.

Denmark coach Kasper Hjulmand is well aware of the strength of our national team and admitted that he has watched Prague Slavia several times. What did he say about the Czech team?

“It is a big challenge. They are a very good team.
I have seen the way of Prague Slavia in Europe. I noticed that they have a great team spirit and I saw them play against Belgium. I was impressed by the Czech intensity in that game. They can fight for each other and have a great mentality,”
Hjulmand said

“They also have great individuals, like Vladimir Coufal and Patrik Schick. Schick is one of the biggest talents in Europe at the moment and I’ve seen him play in the Bundesliga. When you find out you’re going to play against the Czech Republic, it’s unpleasant. They are well coached and have a great attitude. Moreover, we will play against each other after a very long time,” the Danish strategist finished the topic.

Denmark last faced us in a preparatory match in Mladá Boleslav. It was in November 2016 and Antonín Barák made his senior debut for the Czech national team and scored a goal in the Danish net. The match ended in a 1:1 draw.

Historical comparison

Looking at the mutual encounters, we find that the indicators from the past are very even, but play in the slight favour of the Czech team. The Czech Republic has won 3 times, the match has ended in a draw 6 times and only 2 times the Danes have won.

And the total score of the past duels? 10::8 for the Czech Republic, but as coach Kasper Hjulmand said the teams have not faced each other for a long time, so these results cannot be built on at all.

The highest goal difference in one match was the same twice, just for a different team each time. We enjoyed a 3:0 win at Euro 2004, and Denmark returned the same result in the 2013 World Cup qualifiers.

In the Danish squad there are still a few memories of that dominant win. Simon Kjær, the captain of the team, played, and Andreas Cornelius took part in the starting line-up. The now absolute legend and number one Kasper Schmeichel was basking on the substitutes’ bench, along with Daniel Wass.

Experts, supercomputers and bookmakers favour the Danish team, but that means nothing in football. Baku could become the next “football capital of the Czech Republic”, following the example of Budapest.
