VIDEO: Tyson Fury stood for nonsense, but history was rewritten by Oleksandr Usyk! The Ukrainian is the first heavyweight king of the four-belt era
On Saturday night, world boxing history was made. It was the fight of the century. For the first time since 1999, the major heavyweight titles were unified. Tyson Fury jumped into the fray with the WBC belt, Oleksandr Usyk with the WBO, WBA and IBF belts. How did the historic fight go?
On Saturday night, world boxing history was made. It was the fight of the century. For the first time since 1999, the major heavyweight titles were unified. Tyson Fury jumped into the fray with the WBC belt, Oleksandr Usyk with the WBO, WBA and IBF belts. How did the historic fight go?
Riyadh, Saudi Arabia hosted another great boxing gala and it was well worth it. Stars such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar, Ryan Garcia and Anthony Joshua attended the event. The list goes on and on. No wonder.
For the first time since 1999, a fight to unify all the heavyweight titles took place. Lennox Lewis was the last to do it. But Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk also fought over who would become the first undisputed heavyweight king of boxing in the four-belt era.
Moreover, the fight of the century was provided by two men who had never known the bitterness of defeat. It was also quite a pre-fight rumble. And more than once. The weigh-in and the ensuing staredown were interesting. The closer the match got, the more it became apparent that this was indeed a big deal.
The size of the fight was matched by the sums that both fighters had to come up with. Fury stole a much better payday for himself, but even Usyk can’t complain too much. After all, both of them came up with sums that, when converted to crowns, reach over a billion.
The English boxer went into the fight as a slight favourite. It was he, by the way, who was also under more pressure. Also because of the fact that it was because of him that this duel did not take place a little earlier. How did the fight go?
The fight of the century did not disappoint
It was obvious at the entrance whose side the audience was on. It was dominated by Tyson Fury, who got a big ovation and put on a show, as is his good habit, dancing. He got in relaxed. He was thoroughly enjoying the historic moment. Oleksandr Usyk looked focused from the moment he entered the ring, not showing off. He came with one goal in mind. In short, two different characters, two different styles. In everything.
The first two rounds went more to the Ukrainian, but it was close. But Usyk had the better punches in the first one, he focused a lot on the bottom of his opponent. But from the third round onwards, Fury started to pick up the pace. Or so it seemed. He added to the frequency of his punches and the variety. He also landed a lot of hard shots on the bottom, taking oxygen from the Ukrainian star. This was the case in the third, fourth and fifth rounds.
Fury dominated the sixth round in the most dominant fashion to that point. He landed several low kicks, and managed to get the Ukrainian in trouble with head shots. One chin lift in particular landed cleanly. But Usyk was able to hold him off.
The Englishman didn’t look too tired even before the seventh round. He looked fresher than his rival. But Oleksandr was not deterred. On the contrary. He took the seventh round for himself, got even better in the eighth, apparently broke Tyson’s nose and the roles were reversed again.
Then in the ninth round Usyk took the reins of the fight completely to his side. He rocked Fury with a volley of hard shots, the Englishman couldn’t defend himself, he was barely on his feet. It came down to the count. Gypsy King was saved by the bell. We’ve never seen him in such a state.
Round ten was more of a restful round. Fury was looking for stability on his feet, the Ukrainian needed to regain his energy after investing a lot of it in the end of the ninth three minutes.
According to the experts, the Ukrainian puncher went into the champions rounds as the one who won by a whisker. In the eleventh round, he followed up a great performance from the previous ones and although he wasn’t quite as dominant, it looked like he would take it for himself.
Given the evenness of the fight, it wasn’t entirely clear who would win. Neither boxer could rely on the judges. That’s why no one could let the last round go. Even in it we witnessed a balanced spectacle, which was obviously dominated by the Ukrainian fighter.
Oleksandr Usyk has rewritten history!
Both Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk showed their sportsmanship and showed respect for each other after the fight. Even though they didn’t know who won. But they could both believe in their victory. As already mentioned, the duel was evenly matched, however, the more significant moments were on the Ukrainian side.
The scoring judges also disagreed on the result. Each match was scored differently, resulting in a split decision. The Ukrainian boxer won with two judges, one 115-112, the other 114-113. The Englishman won 114-113 with one judge.
Usyk is thus the first boxer since 1999 to unify the heavyweight belts, and the first heavyweight king in the four-belt era.
Fury lost for the first time in his career.
