Some French fans may not have even brought beer yet and their darlings were already losing. The French scored in their friendly against Germany in the seventh second of the game, Florian Wirtz took care of it.
France went into the game as clear favourites, and they were playing at home. But by the time they kicked the ball for the first time, they were already losing. The Germans immediately got the ball in the attacking half of the field and Florian Wirtz opened the scoring with a long-range shot.
Wirtz beats Podolski
The young Leverkusen midfielder rewrote history, no one in the German national team scored a goal faster. The German midfielder hit the net in the seventh second. The Lyon stadium was silent.
The previous record was held by Lukas Podolski. The striker in 2013 struck in the ninth second, taking it to Ecuador. Podolski started a fierce shootout that eventually went 4-2 in favour of the European favourite.
Title man
That history was rewritten by Wirtz is certainly no coincidence. The 20-year-old midfielder is still Leverkusen’s biggest star, scoring seven times and assisting ten times in the league this season. Thanks to him, Bayer is also leading by ten points.
Leverkusen is still alive in the Europa League and League Cup. In the former, Wirtz has three goals and four assists, in the domestic cup he has struck once and assisted his teammates on three goals.
Even if the title is won, there will be speculation about a possible departure of Wirtz for a better one in the summer. The Premier League could be an attraction, but of course a giant like Real Madrid or Barcelona could also be a possibility.
