Saturday night made German football history. Either positively or negatively. The reason is simple. RB Leipzig won their first major trophy when they won the German Cup. However, the winner of German hearts is clearly Freiburg.
Last year it didn’t work out, this time it did. RB Leipzig won their first major trophy when they defeated Freiburg at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin, with whom, among other things, the Saxon side were fighting for a Champions League place. On both occasions he was successful.
A year ago, Leipzig fell to Borussia Dortmund in the cup final. And just like Dortmund a year ago, this year Freiburg had the whole of Germany cheering them on. Expectedly. And the post-match events demonstrated why this is so.
Despite the loss, the Freiburg fans, many of whom came to Berlin, thanked the players and the management team for a fantastic season. They were much louder than the Leipzig supporters. Unexpected, one would like to sigh ironically.
Leipzig is the most hated club in Germany ever, it’s been going on for years. When Leipzig play anywhere, they are met with protests. Some fans don’t go to games, others attack the Saxon team’s buses, but others demonstrate their hatred in other ways.
Even Freiburg’s ultras have prepared for the match in such a way that it is not a normal match against a normal opponent. They have made it clear that Leipzig is the problem. And not just for them, but for the whole of German football.
That’s why they “decorate” the discussion under RB Leipzig’s posts with comments with vomiting smileys, swear words. And that the DFB Pokal winners would make something of it? On the contrary. They are still provoking by pouring Red Bull’s drink into the trophy.
And what else is there in the reactions besides swearing? Talk of the end of German football, of course. Of course, German fans are also rather tired of Bayern’s dominance, but the Munich giant is acting democratically and not breaking the fundamental 50+1 rule.
And that is exactly what Leipzig is breaking. That’s what bothers German fans. Fans are supposed to be part of the club, to participate in its running. But that’s not happening at RB.
“This is the beginning of the end of German football as we know it. The people at the top are allowing the 50+1 rule to be broken and we can look forward to the destruction of fan culture,” one German fan expressed his concerns. And he is not alone.
In addition to Leipzig, Hoffenheim also face similar hatred for the same reasons. While hatred is not the right thing to encourage, the fans’ efforts and persistence to uphold the rules that make football better should be commended.
