The Brazilian national team did not falter in their first match of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, beating Bolivia by a high margin. Neymar, in particular, was on a roll in the match, returning from injury in style and breaking the scoring record held by the legendary Pelé with two goals.

A month without football hasn’t affected him at all

A month without football hasn’t affected him at all! Not only did he contribute with a great performance to Brazil’s victory in the opening round of World Cup qualifiers, but he also broke the record held by the country’s greatest football legend.

While the national break in Europe revolves around the qualifying duels for the upcoming EURO 2024 held in Germany, the World Cup is already being contested in South America. This will be held in 2026 in the USA, Canada and Mexico, and the teams have already completed the first round.

The reigning champion from Argentina made it through their first game thanks to a beautiful direct pass from Messi. Brazil’s national team also did not falter in the first round, as they were able to clearly outplay their opponents from Bolivia at the Mangueirão stadium at home.

The night’s match was particularly impressive for the home team’s biggest star Neymar, who was returning after a month off due to injury. However, he was not affected at all and not only did he become the man of the match, but he also broke another record.

Brazil did not falter in the first qualifying round for the 2026 World Cup

The Seleção could have taken the lead after just a quarter of an hour when a defender played his hand in the penalty area after a back pass from Rodryga and the referee ordered a penalty kick. Neymar, however, punishingly threw the penalty away.

Just seven minutes later, however, the Brazilians were rejoicing when Rodrygo unluckily sent the ball into the open net. Neymar then could have increased his team’s lead in the first half, but he failed to finish a beautiful dribble across half the pitch with a goal.

After the change of sides, the fans did not wait long and after just two minutes Neymar sent a beautiful pass to Raphinha, who with a telegraphed shot overcame the opposing goalkeeper. After another six minutes, Rodrygo again increased Brazil’s lead by three goals.

Half an hour before the end of regulation time, Neymar was at it again, getting to the ball in the whitewash and scoring for the first time in the match. In the 78th minute, Abrego reduced the deficit with an unstoppable shot under the crossbar.

The end of the match, however, belonged to Neymar again. He first hit the crossbar after a beautiful shot from 20 metres. In injury time, however, he was able to convert a precise pass from Raphinha and closed the match to the final score of 5:1.

With two goals, Neymar broke the record of the legendary Pelé

The match against Bolivia was a memorable night for Neymar. His spectacular performance put him ahead of Pelé, the country’s greatest football legend, in the historical scorers’ table with 77 goals.

Neymar’s two goals were his 79th for Brazil, making him the all-time top scorer ahead of the legend who passed away last year. Moreover, Neymar also leads in assists, rightfully ranking him among the biggest names in the football nation.
