VIDEO: Only for the hardened nature. Marcelo unintentionally brutally stomped on his opponent’s shin, possibly ending his career
Marcelo is a hugely popular footballer who has spent his entire career giving joy not only with his smile but also with his technical finesse. But this time it didn’t quite work out and he inadvertently caused a nasty injury to an opposing player.
Marcelo is a hugely popular footballer who has spent his entire career giving joy not only with his smile but also with his technical finesse. But this time it didn’t quite work out and he inadvertently caused a nasty injury to an opposing player.
When Marcelo was finishing up at Real Madrid, he wanted to extend his European career at Olympiakos, but that didn’t bring much success. He only played a few games and returned to his native Brazil, where he donned the Fluminense jersey from where he came to Real.
Since February he has managed to play 15 games, scoring a goal and an assist. But he had a moment in the Copa Libertadores eighth-final that he will want to forget very quickly.
In the match against Argentinos Jrs, he was heading the ball and when he wanted to make a tackle, he accidentally stepped on Luciano Sanchez’s shin. His leg was left lying, but his body was outweighed. The video is really only for the squeamish.
Marcelo immediately stopped play and raised his hand in apology. The referee pulled out a red card and although teammates protested, the star Brazilian accepted the penalty and left the field in tears.
“Today I had to go through a very difficult moment on the pitch. I unintentionally injured a teammate. I want to wish you the best recovery, Luciano Sánchez. I send all the strength in the world!” Marcelo wrote on Twitter afterwards.
The match eventually ended 1-1, with Samuel Xavier answering the Argentinos’ first-half goal in the 87th minute. Fluminense scored one more goal in stoppage time, but the VAR nullified it due to offside.
It is clear that Marcelo will not play the return leg of the eight-final match. The question is how big a penalty he will get. It was clearly unintentional, but it was extremely harsh and may have ended Sánchez’s career. That’s something the commission will probably have to take into account.
