Marcelo left Real Madrid in the summer to try his luck at Olympiakos in Greece. Now, however, he is a player of Brazilian Fluminese and is getting into shape. During the national break, however, he found time for interviews and in one of them he talked about his toughest opponent.
The Real Madrid legend has been going through some rather interesting and unstable months. Since leaving Spain, Marcelo has tried out a loan deal at Olympiakos in Greece, but failed to make it. In February, he signed for Brazilian side Fluminese, but has yet to play for them.
So it seems that after the end at the Santiago Bernabeu comes the rather quick fall of one of the best outside backs in football history until recently.
Marcelo won the Champions League five times with Real Madrid, won the Spanish league title six times, dominated the Club World Cup four times or the UEFA Super Cup three times. At 34, he simply has nothing left to prove.
On the contrary. What’s more, the Brazilian icon has plenty to remember, having faced the best players on the planet. For example, Lionel Messi, Barcelona legend and now star of PSG in France.
How does Marcelo perceive the Argentine idol? “Messi is incredible. He’s the best player I’ve ever faced. We all know the quality he has. Even now, at 35 years old. And it was the same before,” he said in an interview with The Athletic.
“El Clásico has always been one of the best games to watch and play. I was very lucky to be in one of the best eras of these derbies. But of course it wasn’t just about Messi, there were other incredible players,” Marcelo is clear.
The Brazilian has played 546 competitive games for Real Madrid, scoring 38 goals and adding 103 assists. Excellent numbers for a full-back. Can he make his mark in Brazil?
