Oktagon MMA set out to conquer the shores of Great Britain and on Saturday it presented itself in Manchester. In one of the most anticipated fights, Ion Surdu and Alex Lohoré faced off, who also delivered the first KO of the event.
OKTAGON 48 is the first stop for the Czechoslovakian MMA organization on British soil. So it was no surprise that the program catered primarily to British fighters, but one of the most anticipated duels featured two foreigners for the home crowd.
Specifically, it was a bout that pitted Ion Surdu and Alex Lohoré, two aces of the stacked welterweight division. The slight favourite was the former fighter, however Da Killa King had his motivation taken care of. He wanted to avenge his loss to David Kozma.
A win against Lohore could help him do that. But would he be an easy opponent? No, it wasn’t. After all, Alex was the only fighter in the Oktagon to fight three champions of the organization and was beaten only by Kozma, Karlos Vémola, Leandro Silva and Patrik Kincl.
Surdu delivered a KO and claimed the title
So the entertainment was taken care of, even though it was a duel only on the prelims card. Both fighters are great stand-up fighters, so a great shootout was expected. But the crowd had to wait a while for it.
In the beginning it was more of a tactical battle, both fighters were looking for the right distance. There was a mutual respect for each other’s qualities. However, in the last minute of the first round it came.
Lohoré and Surdu hit each other and it looked like the Moldovan might score a mutual knockdown for the second time in the Oktagon, as he did with Velickovic. In the end, though, they both held on and it was clear that Surdu hit better.
Lohore was driven to the canvas and there Dracula unleashed a combination of hard punches. Lohoré defended several of them, only to have two hard chin bombs miss and Da Killa King went down. Head first.
