Karlos Vémola is the new Octagon welterweight champion. But he may not hold the title for long. Surprisingly, he has announced that he will not defend it. And if he does, there are only two names in play.
What will happen to the welterweight division? That’s the question Octagon promoters will now have to address. For the new champion of this weight division may very well not defend it and will give way to his colleagues from Reinders Gym.
Karlos Vémola overwhelmingly outclassed Aleksandar Ilic, giving him no chance in the fight. After less than four minutes it was all over, the Serbian finally had to tap out and didn’t live up to his promise.
However, at the press conference Terminator surprised everyone, including the promoters and owners. Even Ondřej Novotný admitted that he was surprised by Vémol’s move.
“I won’t defend my welterweight title. At most against Attila. He was the only one to beat me at that weight,” the new Octagon champion let himself be heard.
But he hinted at one more name that comes into consideration He was referring to Stephan Pütz, who will test Milos Petrasek in October.
And Petrasek is one of the men for whom Vémola says he will give up the title. He says there are skilled fighters in the Reinders Gym who can challenge for the welterweight title.
Among other things, Vémola wanted to prevent any challenges that might come now. A fight with Rafael Xavier, who could have fought him for the title in Stvanica, is not in the cards.
