Oktagon 41 tournament in Liberec shakes up the world rankings

Things were happening at the Oktagon 41 tournament in Liberec. There were some huge surprises at the tournament, with nine finishes in eleven fights, leaving the fans properly satisfied.

Of course, the gala night shuffled the world rankings. However, Fightmatrix, which is an independent website that is globally recognized for ranking MMA fighters by various categories, revealed some interesting information.

In the main event of the tournament in Liberec, bantamweight champion Jonas Magard surprised everyone present by being the bookmakers’ underdog in his title fight with Gustavo Lopez. But the Danish “shark” dominated the cage and inflicted a technical knockout on his opponent.

Magard moved into the top 100 on Fightmatrix, Vémola dropped despite the win

For the first time in his life, Magard made it to the top 100 in the Fightmatrix rankings. Specifically, he holds the 75th position within the bantamweight division, which is 40 places better than his historical record. This left behind, for example, the undefeated Farid Basharat, who we know from the Octagon and now fights in the UFC. Lopez, on the other hand, dropped out of the top 100 and is ranked 140th.

Paradoxically, the biggest star of the Octagon, Karlos Vémola, fell. After a nine-month hiatus, he made his catchweight debut against Al Matava, whom he stopped in the first round. In just one month he will be in the title fight for the middleweight throne of the Octagon in Prague’s O2 Arena.

However, Fightmatrix somewhat incomprehensibly knocked him out of the welterweight rankings, where he was ranked 49th. Now he is in the middleweight rankings, where he is ranked 67th. He is now nine places behind his rival Patrik Kinzl, who he will face in an expected rematch in May.

It is worth noting that the biggest jumper on the card was Mateusz Strzelczyk with a spectacular knockout. He moved up 88 spots in the welterweight rankings to 124 and is already knocking on the door of the top 100. Similarly, Lazar Todev took the title opportunity from Adam Palasz and is now only 12 positions away from the top 100 heavyweights.

It will be interesting to see how the next Oktagon tournaments will affect the world rankings. But the organization’s fighters are tearing up records in this year’s Fightmatrix rankings, which only confirms the fact that Oktagon is getting special attention among the world’s MMA organizations.
