Sunday’s match between AZ Alkmaar and Nijmegen looked calm, but at the end of the match an event happened that raised the concerns of hundreds of thousands of fans around the world. Striker Bas Dost suddenly fell unconscious.
On Sunday evening, the 10th round of the Dutch Eredivisie was played between AZ Alkmaar and Nijmegen. The visitors went for the win, but unfortunately the match was not played.
At the very end, the striker Bas Dost, whom we can know mainly from his engagement in Wolfsburg, Germany, fell to the ground without being attacked.
He is now thirty-four years old and was the best player in the match. But back to the fateful moment, in the 90th minute, he went back into his own half and then went down.
The referee saw it, but at that moment he couldn’t have known that it was something serious. It was only an opposing player who reacted and quickly ran to him and called the paramedics.
They came running and both teams formed a circle of players around Dost while he was receiving medical attention. He then regained consciousness and was taken to hospital.
From there, he subsequently sent a positive message to fans who were concerned about his health. “I am well,” he wrote alongside a photo of him with his thumb raised, which he posted from the hospital.
“The help I got on the pitch was fantastic. I am now in hospital and feeling fine. Thank you all for your support,” he added.
The incident has once again highlighted that in professional sport it is crucial that every player has access not only to top sporting performance but also to adequate medical care.
