The transfer window hasn’t started yet and Dortmund already have three signings with more on the way. Who is it?
Borussia Dortmund have a lot to fix after their worst season in 5 years. A failed Champions League group stage exit and a subsequent first round Europa League playoff clash. An early exit in the German Cup and second in the league again. So the club wasted no time in buying reinforcements.
Borussia Dortmund have a lot to fix after their worst season in 5 years. A failed Champions League group stage exit and a subsequent first round Europa League playoff clash. An early exit in the German Cup and second in the league again. So the club wasted no time in buying reinforcements.
In the summer, Dortmund will face a player exodus. Recently Manchester City announced that they have signed Erling Haaland from the new season, who was undoubtedly one of the main pillars of the Westphalian side. He scored 85 goals and assisted 23 more in 88 games.
After four seasons, Axel Witsel will also leave the team as his contract is expiring and the club has decided not to renew it. The contract will not be renewed for defender Zagadouvi either. Reinier’s loan spell ends after the season and he will return to Real Madrid. The Brazilian striker has had an unsuccessful 2 seasons, scoring a single goal in 38 games. The same goes for defender Marin Pongracic, who arrived last summer only as a reserve defender.
Defender Marcel Schmelzer will retire after the season. One of the last active players to see Borussia’s last league title has decided to hang up his career after 14 seasons in the yellow and black jersey.
Also last year, sporting director Michael Zorc, who held the position for more than 25 years, announced the end of his career. He was replaced by club legend Sebastian Kehl in the spring. And he is planning big things for next season.
Niklas Süle
The German full-back announced back in February that he would not be extending his contract at Bayern and would just move to BVB. The 26-year-old defender was one of the mainstays at Bayern, but he didn’t feel respected enough at the club. At Dortmund, he accepted virtually the same contract but has the opportunity to become a team leader. According to sources, Süle himself is eager for a new challenge. From a sporting point of view, Niklas is an extremely important reinforcement for BVB, especially considering the shaky defence.
Sebastian Kehl said. He has a lot of experience, calmness in the midfield and the necessary physicality to take the next step with us from the summer.”
Süle has been linked with interest from Chelsea, Barcelona, Real Madrid or Newcastle United, who were keen to take advantage of the situation that the German international will be up for grabs for free when his contract at Bayern expires in the summer.
Nico Schlotterbeck
The 22-year-old defender from Freiburg has been wanted by Borussia for some time. There are not many left-footed stoppers on the market and having one in the team is sometimes almost a rarity.
Schlotterbeck made his debut in Freiburg’s first team in the 2018/2019 season and has played 54 games for them so far, with four goals scored. He will surely bid farewell to the club with a successful season. Freiburg will play the final of the German Cup and the icing on the cake could be qualification for the Champions League.
“Nico is a young German international who has undergone a great development. His profile is ideal for BVB,” said outgoing sporting director Michael Zorc.
His successor Sebastian Kehl added: ” Nico’s journey reminds me of mine when I came to BVB from Freiburg as a young German international. I hope that Dortmund will become the same home for him as it was for me.
“Nico has huge potential. He didn’t choose the most financially advantageous offer from the many clubs interested, but he chose BVB to develop here.”
According to German sources, Freiburg will receive €25m for him.
Karim Adeyemi
The German youngster is expected to add offensive power to Dortmund, which they will lose after the departure of Erling Haaland. The 20-year-old passed a medical in Dortmund on Tuesday and signed a contract valid until June 30, 2027 in the late afternoon.
Adeyemi, the 2021 European U21 champion, is currently the top scorer in the Austrian Bundesliga with 19 goals. He has won six trophies during his four years at Salzburg. In the current season, Adeyemi has made a total of 35 appearances for Salzburg in the Bundesliga and Champions League (22 goals/6 assists).
“As a kid I was fascinated by Dortmund’s fast football. That’s why I was clear that I wanted to move to BVB when I heard about Dortmund’s interest. I deliberately signed a long-term contract because I am convinced that we will have a competitive team and with the support of great fans we can win titles,” Adeyemi said after signing the contract.
“After the transfers of Niklas Süle and Nico Schlotterbeck, we have another very interesting player in Kari Adeyemi for the upcoming season. By the way, one who has a great affection for BVB, whose heart as a youngster was beating for the Black and Yellows and who turned down many offers from Europe’s top leagues to play for Borussia Dortmund. His speed and goal risk are impressive, and although Karim, at just 20 years old, is a long way off in terms of football and sport, we see huge development potential in him,” says Sebastian Kehl.
Who will be next?
Coach Marco Rose himself announced at a press conference today that he would like to bring a new striker and defensive midfielder to the club. Who could it be?
We can hear the most about Sebastien Haller at the spike striker position. He has had a great season at Ajax, scoring 11 goals in just eight games in the Champions League. There is also talk of the Frenchman Ekitik or the Slovenian Šešek. Adam Hložka was also long talked about, but he is apparently on his way to Naples.
Kondrad Laimer, who is also interested in Bayern or Xaver Schlager, could appear in the centre of midfield.
