He has been performing very well for Southampton all season, which led to Kyle Walker-Peters getting his first call-up to the England senior national team in March. However, he found out about the nomination unconventionally in the shower.
Gareth Southgate’s original nomination featured two right-backs. Quite possibly the best right-backs of the moment, Reece James and Trent Alexander-Arnold, however, did not make the meeting due to minor injuries.
Still, the national team coach had plenty to choose from, with Kieran Trippier thriving at Newcastle and Kyle Walker starting at Manchester City, but Southgate reached for another Kyle Walker, nominating Southampton’s Kyle Walker-Peters.
“I was surprised because the nomination was already published, but of course it was a pleasant surprise,” the Southampton full-back told Sky Sports Instagram.
Walker-Peters is building on his good performances from last season this season. He has scored one goal and assisted twice in the league, filling in on the left side of the defence in a pinch, as the talented Tino Livramento is also getting opportunities on the right.
The Tottenham graduate learned of his first senior national team nomination before the FA Cup quarter-final against Manchester City (1: 4). His Southampton teammate James Ward-Prowse also flew to the reunion.
“The day before the game, I was just in the shower when the coaches came to me. They gave us a week off during the national break. Ralph Hasenhüttl asked me where I was going and immediately replied that I wasn’t going anywhere, that I was flying to meet England,” Walker-Peters added with a smile.
It will not only be his first meeting with the England A-team. The other newcomers are Marc Guehi and Tyrick Mitchell of Crystal Palace.
