The only positive about Leipzig’s poor season? Nkunku’s great performances are courting the interest of the big clubs
RB Leipzig is languishing after the departure of coach Julian Nagelsmann. The team is definitely not fulfilling its potential. Still, it can rely on at least one constant, which is Christopher Nkunku and his outstanding performances. If he continues like this, it will not be easy to keep him at the club.
Leipzig lost captain Marcel Sabitzer, defender Dayot Upamecan and coach Julian Nagelsmann over the summer. Despite this, the Saxon side has a quality line-up of players that should definitely struggle higher than mid-table.
However, it could be even worse if Christopher Nkunku, who is a key figure in the team, is not in the squad. The offensive play of the whole team is more or less based on his performance.
The French offensive all-rounder arrived in Germany in the summer of 2019 from PSG for 13 million euros. Now his value is estimated by Transfermarkt at 47 million euros, and it cannot be ruled out that this value will grow even more.
Leipzig could easily want much more for him. The reason? The player’s statistics speak for themselves – 25 competitive games, 15 goals, 10 assists.
In the Bundesliga, Nkunku has a record of 7+7, but he has done well in an extremely difficult Champions League group. Although he didn’t get Leipzig to the promotion, in the competition of PSG and Manchester City, nobody can blame him.
After all, in six group games the Frenchman scored 7 goals, he scored a hat-trick against the Citizens, but he also made his way against PSG. He also added 2 assists.
Nkunku is sovereignly the team’s top scorer, as well as the best passer. Only Angeliño creates more key passes than him, no one can match his shooting activity, and the same goes for the number of fouls or dribbles won.
And what makes the Leipzig star stand out? He’s strong on the ball, plays with great vision and has excellent technique, which is reflected in the quality of his dribbling, passing, centres, shots from distance or playing standard situations.
He knows how to use all his strengths very well. But he should work on his defensive game, which he is not involved in that much. The question is whether and how much it is necessary.
Nkunku is used to playing practically all offensive positions, he can play from both wings, he fits the role of an offensive midfielder, but he can also play on the wing. In short, he is versatile and can be used in many ways.
Manchester United were supposed to be interested in his services in December, but given the competition for his positions, this is not a very likely speculation. However, England might not suit him at all costs, but he would be useful for Bayern or Barcelona, for example, which he would certainly be able to take to a higher level.
