There has been a lot of speculation in recent months about the fate of the welterweight champion of the leading domestic MMA organization Oktagon. After disagreements with the management, it is already clear that Viktor Peshta is leaving Oktagon and heading overseas to the Professional Fighters League (PFL).
Viktor Peshta, who previously worked even in the UFC, returned to the domestic scene in 2019 under the Oktagon MMA banner. He took four fights in Oktagon and then got the opportunity to fight for the welterweight title in September 2021.
His opponent in the title fight was Germany’s “Terminator” Stephan Puetz. He was able to TKO him in the third round, when the doctor stopped the fight due to a laceration, giving Puetz the organization’s championship belt.
A strange situation then arose at the end of the year when the Octagon promoted a title rematch with Puetz. However, champion Peshta reacted in surprise, as he reportedly did not know about the fight. “I see I have a rematch scheduled? It was a surprise to me, but since it’s on the internet, I guess it must be true,” he reported on his Instagram account.
Afterwards, a series of exchanges took place between him and Oktagon promoter Ondrej Novotny and the fighter did not hide his disappointment with his employer’s attitude. This eventually resulted in the withdrawal of the promotion and now we know that Viktor will not continue with the organization after all.
“He had been considering the contract offer for many months. We accommodated him in every way, but in the end he decided to go with the PFL”, Oktagon owner Ondrej Novotny, who tried to keep Viktor in the organization, told Fight Club News. Peshta himself has not yet commented on the situation.
The Professional Fighters League is one of America’s top MMA organizations, which stands out in particular for its tournament-style lineup of fights for a total purse of one million US dollars.
Especially the domestic scene will be deprived of an attractive fighter with a lot of experience. His fight with Karlos Vemola, who has often been teased in the media in the past, will most likely not happen.
